The tradition of whisky distilling is woven deep into the tapestry of Scottish heritage.  Some experts even suspect the practice goes all the way back to the 15th century.  If you’re planning to visit Scotland, why not arrange a distillery tour, or even two, and find out more about this time honoured custom and thriving business.

The Glenturret Distillery is located in Crieff, Perthshire and is home to Scotland’s best-selling domestic whisky: The Famous Grouse Finest Scotch Whisky.  On this award-winning interactive tour, you’ll learn how Glenturret makes its signature single malt and how different varieties are blended to create The Famous Grouse Finest.

The Cardhu Distillery in Knockando is the only malt distillery founded by a woman.  The secret to this distinct whisky is the cold, fresh mountain spring that runs by the distillery.  Cardhu malt distilling is a little-changed, painstaking process; malts are left to mature in oak casks for at least 12 years.

The Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown produces the world’s most famous single malt Scotch whisky.  The Original Tour is completely free, but for a fee the Connoisseurs’ Tour is more detailed and is capped off by a guided nosing.  There’s even a gift shop where you can buy a little something to commemorate your trip.

Glenlivet Distillery in Banffshire is set amid a lonely, wild landscape in Ballindalloch.  Home to another world-famous single malt Scotch, Glenlivet offers guided tours of the distillery and warehouse, as well as a complimentary tasting afterwards.

So don’t delay book yourself on one of the flights to Glasgow or Edinburgh and enjoy a unique experience visiting Scotland’s distilleries.
