Shopping in Turkey

Turkey is awash with art and craft items that make great souvenirs for anyone visiting this fabulous country.
The great bazaars of Istanbul and other cities like Konya and Izmit are fairly packed with exotic Eastern items that can often be picked up for a song, although you should hone your haggling skills before entering the labyrinth.

Turkish carpets are legendary, and they come in all shapes and sizes. The skill has been practised here for millennia, and a really good hand-made carpet can cost thousands of pounds, but there are plenty of cheaper ones to be had – all with wonderful designs.

Silver and gold items can be had for a fraction of what they cost in the West because of the cheaper labour costs, and jewellery is often made by traditional methods in front of you in distinct sections of the bazaars. Leather goods are also relatively cheap and amongst the most sought-after in the world.

Turkey is also famous for its hand-painted tiles, especially those from the city of Iznik, with their gorgeously bright and durable colours and patterns, which make them ideal for displaying at home.

Head for the bazaars in Turkey for some real bargains.
